MISSSION VIEJO – Burglars smashed their way into jewelry store at The Shops at Mission Viejo early this morning, making off with an unknown amount of loot before the mall opened, authorities said.
Construction workers near the mall, 555 The Shops At Mission Viejo, spotted three masked men running from the back entrance of Kevin Jewelers just after 6 a.m. today, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department. The three men ran to a dark gray Porsche Cayenne and drove away.
Deputies were called to the mall and discovered that a 3-foot-by-5-foot window at the front of the store, accessible through the mall, had been broken. For an unknown reason, the broken window did not set off the burglary alarm, he said.
An unknown amount of jewelry was taken. Investigators are still at the scene investigating the robbery, Amormino said.
The gray Porsche was seen driving on Marguerite Parkway toward Avery Parkway, Amormino said.
A Porsche Cayenne getaway car. We have a better class of burglars around here.
UPDATE: I walked by the store tonight and they employees were in there taking inventory and cleaning up. According to further reports the loss was pretty big.
