Michelle Obama has taken casual to a haute new level.I don't mention this story because I care that Michelle Obama wears expensive shoes. I really don't. One of the beauties of capitalism is you can have whatever you can afford, and if she can afford $540 sneakers, good for her.
While volunteering Wednesday at a D.C. food bank, the First Lady sported her usual J.Crew cardigan, a pair of utilitarian capri pants and, on her feet, a sneaky splurge: trainers that go for $540.
That's right: These sneakers - suede, with grosgrain ribbon laces and metallic pink toe caps - are made by French design house Lanvin, one of fashion's hottest labels. They come in denim and satin versions, and have been a brisk seller all spring.
I mention the story because of the double standard that will undoubtedly apply. No Republican first lady could possibly get away with such extravagance in a time of economic peril. She would be the first 10 items in every late night monologue, and every Dem lawmaker that could get to a microphone would denounce her as heartless and out-of-touch with the suffering of America. ACORN and Code Pink would be running ads and marching around the White House.
Remember the wailing and gnashing of teeth that occurred when it was revealed that John McCain had several homes and a number of cars? You won't see that happening to Michelle.
Insensitivity to the plight of others is okay if you're a Democrat.
