Hawaii’s state Senate overwhelmingly approved a bill Wednesday to celebrate “Islam Day” _ over the objections of a few lawmakers who said they didn’t want to honor a religion connected to Sept. 11, 2001.
…The resolution to proclaim Sept. 24, 2009, as Islam Day passed the Senate on a 22-3 vote. It had previously passed the House.
The bill seeks to recognize “the rich religious, scientific, cultural and artistic contributions” that Islam and the Islamic world have made.
I'm sure this will make a nice companion holiday to their "Christianity Day" celebration to honor the missionaries who kept them from being headhunting savages, and "Mormon Day" to honor the religion that has interesting tourist sites all through the islands, such as the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu.
Except that this is no "Christianity Day" or "Mormon Day". If they tried to establish something like that the "separation of church and state" crowd would get their panties in a wad. They have not, however, complained about "Islam Day". They realize there are still headhunters out there.
