CONTROVERSIAL Commons Speaker Michael Martin has resigned.I hope Nancy Pelosi is that eloquent when she resigns.
Mr Martin made a short statement in Parliament this afternoon declaring he will stand down on June 21.
It is the first time in 300 years that a Speaker has been forced out of office.
The Commons was told a new Speaker will be elected on June 22.
Mr Martin resigned in the light of the MPs' expenses scandal. The Sun today launched a petition demanding an immediate general election after "snouts in the trough" MPs caused nationwide outrage.
Tory leader David Cameron backed our stand, saying an early poll is the only way to restore faith in British politics.
In a statement lasting 34SECONDS, Mr Martin told a packed Commons chamber: “Since I came to this House 30 years ago, I have always felt that the House is at its best when it is united.
“In order that unity can be maintained, I have decided that I will relinquish the office of Speaker on Sunday June 21. This will allow the House to proceed to elect a new Speaker on Monday June 22.
“That is all I have to say on this matter.”
