In secret tapes released today, President Richard Nixon tells an aide, "There are times when abortion is necessary – I know that. ... When you have a black and a white, or a rape."
The conversation was with Charles W. Colson, about the Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade decision, which legalized abortion.
Colson seemed to agreed with Nixon's general assessment: "It encourages permissiveness."
In the Jan. 23 1973 chat, one day after the decision, Nixon told Colson that abortion "breaks the family."
Nowadays if you have a black and a white you might get a president.
