It looks like there just aren't enough people willing to part with their money to keep them all going in recession-ravaged Michigan (and Windsor, for that matter).
Local 444 president Rick Laporte said 69 full-time and 34 part-time workers in the casino’s food and beverage department were notified by the company on Monday morning.
The layoffs are considered indefinite. Laporte said the workers’ contract does not include advance notice about pending layoffs.
Laporte said he believes the cause of the layoffs is diminished business at the casino due to new passport requirements at the border.
“Obviously, they’re reducing hours at their restaurants,” Laporte said.
Laporte said he expects casino business will decline further once the summer season ends, and the union is concerned about more bad news to come.
