Political Photo of the Day

Find the Goths:
Apparently this photo is causing some heartburn for the Spanish Prime Minister. Both his daughter are Goths - morbidly morose teens who dress all in black, and they've been trying to keep the girls out of sight of the press.

Well, they're not out of sight now.

Perhaps these girls are "morbidly morose teens" but there's more to goth than this. I'd like to invite you to look beyond the media stereotyping (not unlike the current media stereotyping of conservatives) and test my suggestion that there are Goths of every race, political and religious persuasion. I happen to be a Christian Conservative goth. It's mostly about individuality and self definition, and a refusal to turn a blind eye to the darker side of humanity and human existence, or automatically accept the reality created for you by "the main stream".

Like Republicans, you can see what you want to see. There probably are "knuckle dragging redneck racists" registered to the republican party, but is that what Republicans are about? I urge you to consider that Goth might be more complex than "morbidly morose teens"

I say good for the girls for daring to express themselves in their own way, rather than bowing to conform to the tastes of the world.

I agree with Anonymous... I'm 56 and have been involved in the life style since the beginning. I'm anything but morbid, I enjoy seeing things "through the glass, darkly" and am also a staunch, life long Conservative. All of my goth friends, and most of those I meet out and about, are quite intelligent, well read and educated persons. Quite a few are very politically involved, as well. Goth, as it were, has gotten a bad rap by the media who propagate the stereotypical image so many immediately see when ever it's mentioned. We're really not all that spooky or morbid, once you get to know us. Like every culture, there are elements within that drag it down by acting like idiots, but the majority of us are law abiding, upstanding citizens. We're polite. We love apple pie. We're more apt to be sitting outside in the moonlight eating it, rather than in front of the TV, but we're as normal as anyone else. Heck, we're even friends on FaceBook, Rick.
Thanks for posting that picture, by the way, it's great blog fodder! (I'll give you a nod, of course!)

Same Anonymous here. I was actually there at that Bat's Day. Glad you had fun with it. Bat's day is a fun paradox. It's difficult to get a batch of highly individualistic anti-herd-think people to team up and have fun as a group. It's worse than herding cats.

Many mature Goths have chosen to stare directly at and analyze/understand sorrow, pain, and isloation in ways most people refuse to or are afraid to. For Christian Goths this can lead to a much deeper understanding and relation to the sorrows of God, and deeper remorse over what our rebelious nature has done.

Consequently the joy of our ransom is all the greater, tempered with a sorrow for the lost that walk among us each day, especialy those that refuse to listen to the truth. Maybe I'm just Goth, but how can I not feel constant sorrow and ache for them, and the constant suffering and agony of this world that runs on the engine of human rebellion against God?

God bless.
