Operation Slowdown

The GOP can't stop the health care bill directly, so they're working to stop it indirectly:
Senate Republicans, acknowledging they lack the votes to block a health care reform bill outright, have implemented a comprehensive political strategy to delay, define and derail.

With Democratic leaders and White House officials holed up in Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-Nev.) office negotiating a final bill, Republicans are demanding a deceleration of the process and moving to define whatever plan that emerges as a combination of Medicare cuts, tax increases, higher insurance premiums and rising overall costs.

“Where they’re headed is inconsistent with the American people, so I’m not sure it’s as much about us as it is about making sure that the American people express their deep concerns over this,” Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) said last week. “Certainly they’ve got the votes, but they’re going to have to hold every one of them in the United States Senate to make it through this.”

Senate Democrats are rejecting Republicans’ demands to slow things down, charging that the GOP isn’t interested in working with the majority to craft a bipartisan health care bill. Rather, Reid said repeatedly last week, the Republicans’ primary goal is to sink reform in order to undercut President Barack Obama.

While undercutting Obama would be a benefit derived from the demise of Obamacare, it's not the primary goal. The primary goal is stopping socialize medicine.

Democrats really wanted to get this done before the elections in November. There are two key governors races in New Jersey and Virginia, and should the Democrats lose both those seats, some of which would be caused by a blowback against Obamacare, they fear they could lose even more Democrat votes as some of their people are scared off.

It's very likely the Democrats will lose Virginia and even with Gov. Corzine in New Jersey pouring money and famous names into his race, he's far from a lock for re-election. That election night could be a difficult one for Democrats an for Obamacare.

I hope that the November elections become a frightning nightmare for the Democrats and that their grip on Congress is loosened to the point that common sense can prevail.

This healthcare vote needs to be delayed until after Obama signs the Copenhagen agreement which will almost certainly mandate an additional tax called "Cap and Trade." The American taxpayer cannot afford either (during this recession) let alone ...both. The opposition will be able to cite both as a tax increase which amounts to about 10-20k per year per household.
