White House adviser David Axelrod on Sunday said the health-overhaul bill passed by the House would “change the status quo” on abortion rights.Let me translate that for the pro-lifers who thought the passage of the Stupak amendment was a tremendous victory.
The legislation includes an amendment that would prohibit a proposed government-run health insurance plan or any insurance bought with the help of government subsidies from covering abortions. The restriction wouldn’t apply in the case of rape, incest or when the life of the mother is threatened.
Critics of the amendment contend that the restrictions go too far. Among other things, some critics suggest that the proposed limits would tighten current restrictions, which are renewed annually in the congressional appropriations process, by making them permanent for the new programs that would be created under the health bill.
House leaders agreed at the 11th hour to allow a vote on the amendment, which socially conservative Democrats pushed to be included in the health bill. The amendment was approved.
In an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union with John King,” Axelrod said “I think it is fair to say that the bill…does change the status quo.” He said President Barack Obama “doesn’t believe that this bill should change the status quo,” and added that he would “work with the Senate and the House to try to ensure that, at the end of the day, the status quo is not changed.”
It wasn't. Obama will make sure it's taken out. Abortion funding will be allowed in the final bill (assuming one gets out of the Senate).
