Obama's "My Pet Goat" Moment

Don Surber has some thoughts on Obama's response to the Fort Hood shootings:
President Obama was at a meeting with American Indian chiefs on Thursday when news broke that Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, a psychiatrist, had gone berserk and shot and killed 12 people and injured 31 others at Fort Hood Texas.

Rather than somber, President Obama began his remarks with a joking “shout-out” to “Dr. Joe Medicine Crow — that Congressional Medal of Honor winner.”

Yes, let us politic and kiss up to a voting bloc first, show some sympathy later.

When he finally got around to acknowledging the deaths and devastation at Fort Hood, President Obama blinked more than Nancy Pelosi walking out of a coal mine into the sunlight.

he spoke with all the enthusiasm of a fellow heading to an IRS audit.

In the clip (around 4:20) he said: “I want all of you to know that as commander in chief that there is no greater honor but also no greater responsibility for me than to make sure that the extraordinary men and women in uniform are properly cared for…”

The emphasis in that sentence is “me.”

It is all about him.

I waited a day before getting into the politics of this military tragedy. But I must say, President Obama showed little sympathy and little enthusiasm.

I long for the days of Bill Clinton, who could at least work up some tears at the appropriate time.

We got robobama last night.
You'll recall that the left has gone crazy for years because when President Bush was first informed of the 9/11 attacks as he was reading "My Pet Goat" to some school kids in Florida, he didn't jump up screaming and run from the room. He continued what he was doing for several minutes while aides gathered information about what was going on. In fact, there's nothing he could have done in those moments to change the events of that day, but nevertheless it became a focus of criticism for the Bush-haters.

Well, now Obama has had his "My Pet Goat" moment, but he failed in ways Bush never could. Obama had already been briefed on the events in Texas before he entered the room and already had a prepared statement. It's clear that politics trumped tragedy. Fort Hood was simply an annoyance to be swatted away, like the fly he killed during his NBC interview.

It seemed as though his response was a lower priority item on his check list, and he was merely going through the motions to check the to-do completion box. He was clueless to his audience and the lack of priority "message" he sent. Even today, I bet he does not feel the impact. He will get a report of American "folks" sentiment. It will be one-sided; and once again he will go through the motions, but will never internalize how this nation was hurt, and his lack of an appropriate response. His henchmen will see to it that he only receives what he can "hear." The information does not include the masses, for we live and breathe outside the bubble. It's a sad time in our nation's history.

I heard Elie Wiesel criticise those at the Bachmann health care rally for comparing the healthcare plan to Dachau.
