A Veteran Democrat Looks at the Palin Phenomenon

Former California Assembly Speaker and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown comments on the Sarah Palin whirlwind:
Sarah Palin has done it again. This book tour of hers has put her right back to the front of the personality parade, and boy, is she coming out shooting with both barrels at the Republican insiders who want to see her gone.

Not only is she commanding every show from O'Reilly to Oprah, she is sending their ratings sky high. Name another politician from either party with that kind of pull.

She is also clearly the hottest ticket when it comes to fundraising for Republicans, not that there is much competition for that role these days.

I don't think she will have much effect on Republican policy, but then again, who does?
I wouldn't be so sure about that last part. I don't know whether Palin could win a 2012 nomination, but she'll certainly have an effect on the party. She's enormously popular with the conservative base and that could make her the king or queen maker in 2010 and 2012. She'll be highly sought for campaign appearances next year to promote conservative candidates, and if she's not a candidate in 2012, whoever she endorses will have a leg up with the conservative part of the GOP base.

I hear (in response to what I say) ponderous pronunciations about how the third-party folks had better watch out--if they don't get into the big tent with the leftist....excuse me....the moderate Republicans we will surely elect another Democrat ___fill-in-the-blank_____.

I say, the if we have to have another big-government-big-spending leftist as ___f-i-t-b___, I want them to sign their names with a (D- following--I'm tire of hearing "The Republicans....years...why didn't you..."

Let me say that another way.

If the Republicans don't move their tent over here where I am, I'll go vote for the Democrat.

If I go vote at all--the poling place is a 25 mile trip--I might not be able to afford the gasoline.
