You can blame Hollywood’s doom and gloom on the Oscars, but I’m not going to. Instead, I think it’s George W. Bush’s fault. Most liberal directors felt restless under his presidency, and they pushed the envelope with over-the-top, operatic tragedies.Of course, George W. Bush caused Hollywood directors to forget how to make movies that the public is willing to go see and instead their depression drove them to produce crap that might win an award but will ultimately lose money.
Hollywood never has figured out one important rule of making money in the movies: Don't make an "R" rated film. "R" ratings limit the audience and have shown over time to make far less money than "G" or "PG" movies. Directors, in an effort for artistic purity and approving nods from their colleagues, end up adding gratuitous and frankly stupid sex scenes that don't advance the plot line one bit but guarantee them an "R" rating. It also guarantees them that the movie will not make as much money as it might otherwise have.
It's not that hard to figure out.

For Hollywood types, everything is hard to figure out. There was a reason that at the beginning of Hollywood as a film center, renters put out signs, "No Dogs or Actors". Demeans dogs, but...
Of course it's W's fault, He drove all those Hollywood people to drink drugs, various kinds of insanity, and probably a few perversions as well.
Man, I wish he'd come back!
Most Hollywood movie directors are a sorry lot. They and they alone are responsible for the failure of their bad movies. Bush had absolutely nothing to do with this.
If Hollywood cannot clean up their own business, then I say let their business go down the drain and they can board their studios up.
