With the heated debate over health care reform gaining lots of attention, some of the finer details buried in the dense bill have been drowned out. One of which is national calorie labeling. Are there really people who don't understand that a bacon cheeseburger might have more calories than a plain salad? Are we all so stupid that we need the food Nazis to tell us what we should and shouldn't eat?
After seven years of fighting for national nutrition labeling among chain restaurants, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is now jumping for joy! Tucked away inside the health care reform bill signed by President Barack Obama Tuesday, March 23, is language mandating all major restaurant chains with 20 or more outlets to provide calorie labeling on menus, menu boards, and drive-through displays. Also required to abide by this bill – vending machines. The chain restaurants are also required to provide additional nutrition information on request. Small businesses are exempt from the bill as well as daily or temporary specials and customized orders.
The Democrats think so. I predict that as Obamacare becomes more and more pervasive in our society that the government will not only want to label the menus, but control what food items are offered. After all, that bacon cheeseburger you wanted may lead to higher health care costs and we can't have that.
