The House Democratic freshmen who rose to power riding candidate Barack Obama ’s coattails in 2008 are now eager to strut their independence heading into the midterms.Talk about putting lipstick on a pig. Freshman Democrats in tough districts would LOVE to have a visit from Obama if there was any chance it would help, but it won't. Obama's "star power" has proved to be a candidate killer in four high profile races in Massachusetts, Virginia, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Bringing him anywhere near a highly contested district would pretty much ensure the end of a freshman Dem's House career.
Some rookies opposed Obama’s cap-and-trade climate change bill; others rejected his health care plan. But even those members who backed all of the president’s signature initiatives are ready to show that they can win their first re-election bids without leaning on Obama’s star power.
The president will travel and campaign this year, but you'll only see him in very safe Democrat districts and campaigning for sure-thing Dem candidates. He's toxic to anyone in a tough race.

These Freshman Blue Dogs were allowed to vote No so they could be protected. Both Cap-and-trade and HCR passed anyway. Allowing them to vote No gave the Blue Dogs something to stand on. When you add in the Stimulus cash that will be loudly and visibly injected into their districts leading up to the election, these Blue Dogs will be stronger than the All-Wise RNC gives them credit. I expect the GOP to choke on races that they should win, just like they choked on being conservative when they were in power.
