Humans Scramble to Save Whale. Whale Dies Anyway

Lilly the whale, who spent some time in Dana Point Harbor this past week and was aided by the staff from Sea World, has gone to that great ocean in the sky:
The body of a gray whale has washed up on Doheny State Beach at about 4 p.m. on Friday, sources say.

A weakened Lilly the whale appeared to be laboring and clinging to life for the last few days and had been in and out of the harbor of this city since Monday.

The disentanglement of the some 30-foot mammal – whose age biologists could not agree on – from gill netting and rope on Wednesday captivated the attention of people across Orange County, scientists and the media.

"I am saddened by it, of course, we're all whale lovers down here in Dana Point," said Mike Bursk, a marine biologist and captain of the institute's research boat Sea Explorer, who reported he could see the creature on the sand from the boat.

While still holding out some hope, biologists had said around mid-afternoon Friday that odds of Lilly's survival were diminishing rapidly and federal officials were in the process of assembling a team in the event the mammal washed up on the beach, dead or alive.

Federal officials don't expect to do anything with the whale Friday night.
I'd like to suggest they not try to blow it up:

I love the whales and feel quite sad about this whale having been wrapped up in fishing nets and now dying. There were many rescurers
who attempted to save the whale. The thing that strikes me is that we here in America don't make any such effort to save Babies who are unable to help themselves. This is what really should make a person sad.

This is Oregon; we do things differently here. Have a little fun with dy-no-mite, too.
