The Good Old Days

As I mentioned yesterday my wife found some old Beatles memorabilia in a box that's been sitting in our garage for nearly 20 years, and along with that stuff was a Saturday Evening Post from August of 1964. Things have obviously changed since 1964. Today we're on a sugar free kick and moms are warned against giving little Tommy too much sugar in their drinks or breakfast cereals, and Michelle Obama is starting a campaign to stop childhood obesity.

Look at what moms were concerned about in 1964 - I just cracked up when I read this full-page ad:

I zoomed in on the "Note to Mothers" section in the bottom right:
And the other note in the lower left:

Remember, these were the days when breakfast cereals were called "Sugar Pops", "Sugar Smacks" and "Sugar Frosted Flakes". No breakfast cereal company would dare use the word "sugar" in their title today.

The good old days.

This makes me so sad. Today, in California, kids have to have approval from the government (a work permit) to work before the age of 18 (http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/ct/we/wpfaq.asp#Q1). According to the FAQ, the state has determined that to be classified as an independent contractor, "...the person needs to be licensed or certificated in a particular expertise, have specialty skills, and the service is not offered through the employer.." which excludes minors. In 2008, the OC Register settled a $22 million class action lawsuit filed by letter carriers (http://www.ocregister.com/articles/carriers-20634-register-newspaper.html).

And the kid in the ad would have been fined for not wearing a helmet, and cited for dangerous behavior for pedaling his kid brother to a music lesson, since bikes are only approved for one rider.
