LOS ANGELES -- Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Thursday he will release records on Friday spelling out the official duties he performed at dozens of concerts, sports events and awards shows that he attended free of charge. If in fact the tickets were free I can't get too exercised about this. Part of being a big city mayor is representing the city at all kinds of things. Quite often that means just showing up at high profile events, and Los Angeles is full of high profile events. With all the sports and entertainment extravaganza's that go on in town I don't think it's unrealistic for the mayor to attend. He's going to get lots of opportunities and who could blame him for accepting?
The mayors practice of accepting free entry to those events is the subject of an investigation by the citys Ethics Commission and an inquiry by Dist. Atty. Steve Cooleys Public Integrity Division.
Villaraigosa has been seen at Los Angeles Lakers games, sitting in the owner's box at Dodger Stadium and at the Grammys and other award shows.
While I'm not a fan of his politics I am a fan of his style. He's everywhere, both in good times and bad. When the Metrolink crash occurred in Chatsworth, which is just about as far as you can get from downtown and still be in the city, he was there very quickly and stayed to help coordinate the emergency response. I've seen him do that kind of thing over and over. That's what you do when you're mayor.
I'm willing to cut him some slack on the whole ticket thing.
