Along with grocery carts and check stands, California's supermarket shopping experience is marked by a simple question: Paper or plastic?I'm going to ask for paper every time because it's important to rid the state of those unsightly trees so we can see what we're saving.
Soon the answer may be neither.
California would become the first state to ban grocery, liquor and drug stores from providing free paper or plastic bags under legislation pushed by Democrats and supported by Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The goal is to fight litter and lighten the load on landfills by getting shoppers to use reusable fabric bags. Those who don't could buy paper bags for a nickel or more.
I've been around long enough to remember when paper bags was the only option. Then along came plastic which was hailed as a great advancement because it would save trees. People didn't like the plastic bags because paper would stand up in your car and keep stuff from spilling while the plastic wouldn't hold anything in.
Now they want us to use cloth bags which are a health hazard if you don't wash them after each use. Any spilled liquids from meats and such can fester and breed dangerous bacteria in cloth bags, a problem you don't have when you throw away or recycle plastic.
How long until some kid dies because of an e-coli infection he got from a dirty cloth bag?
