Dwight for Manager?

We divert for a moment from rioters and liberal Democrats (I know, same thing) to jump to the entertainment field where one of my favorite shows will be undergoing a major change.  Steve Carell, who plays the crazy manager of the Dunder-Mifflin Scranton branch (now a division of Sabre) will be leaving the show after this next season and producers are scrambling to figure out how to go on.  They think they've got an answer:
Rainn Wilson failed to snag an Emmy nomination for The Office this morning, but he still has reason to pop open the champagne today: The actor has emerged as the odds-on favorite to succeed the departing Steve Carell as boss.

“I’d love to see Rainn Wilson in that position,” says coexecutive producer/costar Mindy Kaling, who snagged a much-deserved Emmy nomination for co-writing last season’s four-star Jim/Pam wedding episode. “Dwight has become so nuanced — you actually care about him now. I think if [we did a good job laying the groundwork] this coming season, he would be a fantastic boss.

“But that’s my dream,” she adds. “It certainly hasn’t been approved by people that are more powerful than me and who make those kinds of decisions.”

Kaling says she’s always been a “promote from within” kind of gal as opposed to “trying to throw in an element of the show that people don’t know.
I'm not so sure. There are very few successful shows that have managed to survive the loss of a major character. Cheers continued on after the Shelley Long left, M*A*S*H was able to survive the loss of MacLean Stevenson, but if you look at a more recent example SCRUBS staggered along briefly after Zach Braff left and became almost unwatchable.  Given the central role that Carell's Michael Scott character plays in every episode I just don't see how the show can continue without him.  I think I'd rather see it end than lose its comedic edge
