I'm beginning to smell a rat in this whole thing. Activists in other areas of political life have often raised a ruckus about something, be it racism or whatever, to gain public attention in the hopes that some weak-kneed politician would make them a sweetheart deal to go away. Perhaps the real plan is to build an Islamic center, but not in that location. Instead, build it with your tax money somewhere less controversial a few blocks away. It wouldn't be the first time something like that was tried.
