From 1986 through 2005 Thanksgiving was at my in-laws (future in-laws in 1986). For at least 15 straight years my main job was helping my father-in-law get the giant bacon-covered turkey out of the oven and onto the serving tray. It was a delicate job and one worthy of sneaking a piece of bacon.
In 2005 my whole side of the family traveled to Oklahoma for Thanksgiving, and by the time the holiday came around again in 2006 my mother-in-law had left us. Thanksgiving hasn't been the same since then. Both in-laws and my father have all gone since 2006, and my daughter now lives up north. Most of my extended family is out-of-town this holiday, and my wife's family live in other parts of the country. Oh well, such is life.
We'll have a good time enjoying each other's company and eating the great meal my wife is preparing, a meal which will include turkey with bacon on it, and the pistachio salad my mother-in-law used to make that became a favorite of my son. We'll have lots of memories.
Speaking of memories, it's my custom to run this favorite video from WKRP in Cincinnati:
