The Morning News on Channel 5 is reporting on a turkey giveaway in Los Angeles where something like 10,000 people are waiting in a blocks-long line for a free turkey. The reporter is telling us that if it weren't for these free turkeys the thousands of people in line wouldn't have a Thanksgiving at all.
And yet, as the camera pans down the overwhelmingly black crowd I see a lot of people who are dressed fairly nicely, many of whom are talking on their cellphones or wearing some significant bling. I'm guessing if you can afford a cellphone or a heavy gold chain you can probably afford a turkey.
No doubt some of the people are as the reporter described, but I think there are a lot of freeloaders in that line with nothing better to do than wait for hours in the cold for a free bird.
