Twenty years ago today President George H.W. Bush announced the beginning of Operation Desert Storm, the effort to drive the Iraqis out of Kuwait. This followed months of Operation Desert Shield in which we and our allies built up forces in the area in preparation for the aerial attacks and eventual invasion that began on this day in 1991.
I remember this day very well because just a few days later I was scheduled to travel on a business trip to Michigan, a state with a large Iraqi population. There was genuine concern on the part of my employer that travel on the airlines so soon after the attacks started, and especially travel to Michigan, might be hazardous. I was offered the chance to postpone the trip.
Because of time demands for the project we were working on we didn't cancel and nothing bad happened during the trip, though we did note an increased security presence at the airports we traveled through.
