Which president will show up in Tucson tonight? Will Obama rise above the partisan fray and bring words of healing to the memorial service tonight, or will he be unable to resist the temptation to join the idiot chorus and point fingers at everyone but the suspect while blaming this mess on heated political rhetoric (even though the evidence now suggests the suspect was not influenced by political rhetoric at all)?
And how many ways will the media portray this as "Obama's finest moment" even if it's mediocre and petty (I guarantee you the reviews are pretty much already written - they just need to drop in some phrases from the speech)?
Dem pollster Mark Penn suggested a few weeks before this happened that Obama needed his own Oklahoma City to resurrect his poll standings. Bill Clinton did himself a lot of good with his remarks at the memorial service in 1995, but does Obama have that level of compassion in him? He's never learned the Bill Clinton lip quiver and if he feels anyone's pain, he's never shown it.
We'll see....
UPDATE: Looks like Obama brought his A-game tonight, though whoever organized this thing should be on their way to a new job. Up to Obama's part of the memorial the whole thing reeked of a political rally rather than a memorial for the fallen and wounded.
Obama's speech seems to have hit the right tones, more healer than politician, and that's good. He even subtly criticized those on the left who tried to turn this tragedy into an opportunity to bash various voices on the right. Even the conservative pundits are describing this as a great speech and totally appropriate for the moment.
Well done, Mr. President.
