Rep. Peter King, a Republican from New York, is planning to introduce legislation that would make it illegal to bring a gun within 1,000 feet of a government official, according to a person familiar with the congressman's intentions. How in the world are you going to enforce that, especially in states where concealed carry is almost as common as cellphones? If you happen to walk into a store where your congressman is shopping, are you now a felon? If you're driving along the highway with a gun in the car and your congressman's chauffeured limo is passing you, are you bound for the Gray Bar Hotel?
And does anyone seriously believe that the presence of this law on the books would have in any way prevented a nutcase from showing up at the event with a gun? Do you think this guy would have been planning his attack only to slap his forehead and say "what am I thinking, you can't take a gun within 1,000 feet of a government official! I'll be breaking the law!!"
I wish legislators would engage their brains rather than overreact at tragic incidents and think they can fix the world with just one more piece of stupid legislation.
