Half a century ago, when the Soviets beat us into space with the launch of a satellite called Sputnik¸ we had no idea how we’d beat them to the moon. The science wasn’t there yet. NASA didn’t even exist. There's a big difference between Sputnik and what's going on today. When Sputnik was launched in 1957 America was humiliated by the advancements the Soviets had made in their space program. The beeping basketball the Ruskies put in orbit did motivate significant achievements by the American people. However, we were facing off against our mortal enemy and not only was pride on the line but the ability to defend ourselves from an attack from space.
But after investing in better research and education, we didn’t just surpass the Soviets; we unleashed a wave of innovation that created new industries and millions of new jobs.
This is our generation’s Sputnik moment.
America's problem today is not a battle with a foreign enemy but a battle with ourselves - at least with those who would make government the Lord of our lives. What industries or scientific innovation can we create to stop that? The best thing the government could do for us today is get the heck out of the way and let the entrepreneurs and innovators of this nation take their liberty.
Whoever wrote the Sputnik line doesn't get it. And let's not forget that Obama has essentially taken us out of the manned space business.

It's not the speech writer who doesn't get it, although that person may too be clueless. It's Ubumma. It's his speech. He said it. But we already knew he doesn't get it.
