Another School Asking for a Lawsuit

And they got one:
The Los Angeles Unified School District is facing a lawsuit after a fifth grade student at Superior Street Elementary School was reportedly told his talent show song had “too much Jesus” in the lyrics.

The student was planning to do an interpretive dance to Christian music artist Steve Wee’s song, “We Shine”.

The boy’s attorneys claim his principal said he could not use the song because it’s “offensive” and “violates the separation of church and state.”

His mother says he performed to the song in front of the PTA during last month’s selection process. Songs from artists such as Miley Cyrus and Selena were reportedly approved.

Superintendent Ramon Cortines says he’s aware of the lawsuit and plans to meet with district attorneys Wednesday.

Cortines told CBS2’s Kristine Lazar that the Blue Ribbon school is one of district’s the highest performing institutions and that “too much may be being made of this incident.”

The boy’s attorneys say they want to overturn whatever district or school policy is keeping him from performing in the school talent show.

However, Cortines says this is a federal – not a district – policy.
"Offensive"? To who? And can the principal show me where the "separation of church and state" can be found in the Constitution? It's not there, only the establishment clause which prohibits the state from creating an official religion.

Unless the school is planning to make "We Shine" the official school song, there is no violation. Perhaps the official school song should be "We Whine".

The school will lose this one if they insist on sticking to their policy.

The song is by Steve Fee. I had to check out those 'offensive' lyrics:

Yeah, yeah, we shine, we shine, with the light of God
And when we speak, we speak with words of love
And when we dance, we may get a little wild
Cause we're the people of God, yeah, the people of God

When we sing, we sing, the angel's song
The ones they're singing around the throne
Yeah, yeah, we worship the King with everything that we are
Cause we're the people of God, yeah, the people of God

And now is the time for the poeple to rise
Lift up a shout, everybody cry out
Raise your voice, shout out a noise
And dance a dance of joy

[Chorus]
We are the redeemed
We are the ones who are free
And we belong to Jesus
We are now alive
And in this world we will shine
Cause we belong to Jesus

The spirit of God is freedom rings
So come on, come on throw off your prison chains
We're liberated by the King only freedom remains
For the people of God, yeah, the people of God

We're livin in kingdom that will never end
We're livin in the power that defeated sin
So come on everybody let your praise begin
Cause Jesus is alive and he's comin again

And now is the time for the poeple to rise
Lift up a shout, everybody cry out
Raise your voice, shout out a noise
And dance a dance of joy

[Chorus]

We're goin into all the world
Carrying the light of Jesus
And we shine, yeah we shine
In the darkest place we shine (x2)

And now is the time for the poeple to rise
Lift up a shout, everybody cry out
Raise your voice, shout out a noise
And dance a dance of joy

[Chorus x2]

Come on, come on, your kingdom is comin
Come on, come on, your kingdom is comin
Come on, come on, come on, let your kingdom come down (x2)
