Discovery Launch As Seen From a Passing Airliner

This is pretty cool video of last week's launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery:

Aww, he turned the camera off just 5 seconds before the SRBs were jettisoned. He missed the best part of the show!

I was thinking the same thing. I would have stuck it out through the SRBs.

Amazing! To put that many tons of machinery into space, and then to re-use the launch vehicle. 10,000,000 parts flying in loose formation, built by the lowest bidder. I believe Carpenter said that. But that is a technology that no-one else in the world has, and we are retiring it. With no real replacement in the short term.

Thank you for posting it.

The shuttle is hardly re-usable - more like rebuildable. It is a total kluge and it's amazing they only lost two, or roughly one every sixty flights. Hopefully the new generation of commercial launch vehicles will do better and eventually we will have a STS that runs like an airline.

Remember when we were smart enough and had enough vision and guts to build something like this?

Ah, those were the days...
