Idiot: Don't Build a Wal-Mart Because Our Kids Are Crooks

There are lots of reasons why local citizens might oppose the building of a Wal-Mart in their community.  More often than not it has something to do with the impact on other local businesses.

However, and Advisory Neighborhood Commission member in Washington D.C. came up with a novel reason for her opposition:

Brenda Speaks, a Ward 4 ANC commissioner, actually urged blocking construction of the planned store in her ward at Georgia and Missouri avenues NW partly because of that risk. Addressing a small, anti-Wal-Mart rally at City Hall on Monday, Speaks said young people would get criminal records when they couldn’t resist the temptation to steal.

So, according to Speaks, the kids of D.C. are so morally fragile that the presence of the big retailer will prompt them to steal. They're also apparently not very good at it since she expects them to get caught too.

What an idiot.
