Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, by holding firm, is winning his face off against the public employee unions and their Democratic handmaidens. Yes, the state senate Democrats remain in an undisclosed location in Illinois, but their situation has become a whole lot more precarious. TheAP reports:That voter ID law will put a real dent in the Democrat vote count in 2012. You usually have to factor in a certain percentage of fraud, but that number will drop considerably if voter ID is required.
Republicans and Democrats in the Wisconsin Assembly have agreed to a deal that will limit further debate on a bill taking away collective bargaining rights for public workers and lead to a vote on the measure later Thursday. The deal was announced shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday following an unprecedented 40-hour debate that began Tuesday morning with only short breaks in between.Democrats agreed to limit further amendments to just 38 with a 10-minute time limit on each one. If they take the maximum time for each, with no breaks, that would put the vote around noon.So senate Democrats are going to remain out of state while their assembly colleagues give way to the will of the majority? And meanwhile, the canny governor is racking up other wins. Here's from the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel:With 14 Democrats remaining in Illinois and continuing to boycott the Senate, Republicans easily passed a bill repealing a requirement that law enforcement collect data on the race of all drivers they stop.Republican leaders also scheduled a vote for Thursday on a bill to require people to show photo ID to vote. That bill - abhorred by Democrats, who believe it will disenfranchise voters - also could get through the Senate with little debate because Democrats have shown no signs of returning.
I'm beginning to think we could get a lot done if Democrats would simply refuse to show up.
