A driver died Wednesday afternoon after a vehicle went off a roadway, down an embankment and onto train tracks before catching fire, authorities said.
The Toyota Camry was traveling eastbound on Paseo de las Colinas about 3:40 p.m., when it went off the roadway, landing on the tracks near Camino Capistrano and Avery Parkway, Orange County Sheriff's Department Lt. Jerry Carlsen said.
The vehicle apparently jumped the curb line on the side of Paseo de las Colinas at Star Drive, went over a chain-link fence and down an embankment, Sheriff's Department investigator Dan Salcedo said.
The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed, Salcedo said, with the driver never braking or attempting to negotiate a turn in the roadway. The vehicle appears to have sideswiped at least one other car before going down the hill.
California Highway Patrol officers determined that the driver had died at the scene of the crash, Carlsen said. Authorities did not say whether the driver was a man or woman.
No trains were struck by the vehicle, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Greg McKeown said. No other injuries were reported.
