A former San Francisco Bay area transit officer convicted of the fatal shooting of an unarmed man on an Oakland train station platform was released from jail early Monday after serving 11 months of a two-year sentence, officials said. The shooting was a terrible accident - a case of an officer grabbing his gun thinking it was his taser - and a death resulted. It was not racism or racially motivated and the courts agreed.
Johannes Mehserle was set free from a Los Angeles County jail, where he served his time after his attention-getting trial was moved to Southern California, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore said.
Whitmore told The Associated Press that Mehserle was released from custody at Twin Towers facility as of 12:01 a.m.

A judge ruled Friday that Mehserle should be given credit for time served and good conduct.
The race hustlers were out yesterday trying to stir up the usual trouble, and I hear there's another rally in L.A. today. I guess some folks are hoping for another excuse to grab some free sneakers in a looted shoe store before it's all over. Since the Lakers let them down and there won't be any post-championship rioting in L.A., something has to take its place.
