Separation of Church and State...Unless You're Talking About Government Spending

Rep. Emmanuel Cleaver from Missouri has been setting a new record for stupid in his tweets about the debt ceiling plan.  He coined the phrase "sugar-coated Satan sandwich" to describe the deal, a description which is causing much merriment on the right, he also tweeted this last night:
This debt deal is antithetical to everything the great religions of the world teach, which is take care of the poor, aged, vulnerable.
I thought we were supposed to keep our government and religious teachings separate?

While the religions of the world may teach those things, they teach them to their followers, they are not instructions on how to run a government.  I have no problem with "spreading the wealth" when it comes to monies voluntarily donated to religious organizations, but I have a real problem with the idea that religion gives cover to governments which take wealth at the point of a gun and then spread it to their cronies or those from whom they wish to buy votes.  There's nothing religious about that.

We call that armed robbery.

I still don't see what the left is all steamed about. From what I've read the cuts are to reduce the deficit, so the debt will still go up-up and away and won't kick in for a couple years. The democrats get an instant debt ceiling increase, and they can come back next year and undo the cuts of this deal.

Every time it seems like conservatives have some leverage, the 'compromise' involves liberals getting what they want now and conservatives settling for a promise of what they want later. The promises then get quietly nixed.
