Why Ash Wednesday?

I grew up in a denomination that didn't observe Ash Wednesday or Lent, and frankly, I don't think I missed anything.  However, for those who like me didn't even know what it was until later in life, Mark Roberts provides an explanation of the meaning behind the Ash Wednesday observance.  You can read it here.

Hard to know what you missed when you haven't experienced it. There are lots of unbelievers who feel they haven't missed much by never going to church, but then we know better.

Ash Wednesday brings to remembrance our need to repent, reinvigorating the spiritual life. Can any Christian eschew repentance? Can any Christian say that their spiritual life is so great that it doesn't need reflection?

These traditions are to remind us of who we are and to whom we belong. These are not the vain traditions of which Jesus spoke. Most of us fall into sin because we just plain forget.
