Nanny Bloomberg's Anti-Soda Binge

Mayor Michael "Nanny" Bloomberg won't rest until New York City is the dullest place on earth:
New York City plans to enact a far-reaching ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts, in the most ambitious effort yet by the Bloomberg administration to combat rising obesity.

The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March.

The measure would not apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks like milkshakes, or alcoholic beverages; it would not extend to beverages sold in grocery or convenience stores.

“Obesity is a nationwide problem, and all over the United States, public health officials are wringing their hands saying, ‘Oh, this is terrible,’ ” Mr. Bloomberg said in an interview on Wednesday in City Hall’s sprawling Governor’s Room.

“New York City is not about wringing your hands; it’s about doing something,” he said. “I think that’s what the public wants the mayor to do.”
The public didn't elect a nanny, but that seems to be what they got. Bloomberg has really become tiresome.

P.J. O'Rourke refers to liberals like Bloomberg as "Fun-Suckers".

"They're the ones who go around saying how unsafe this fun thing is and how unhealthy that fun thing is and how unfair, unjust, uncaring, insensitive, divisive, contagious and fattening every other thing that's fun is.

"They are a bit too careful, a bit too concerned, a bit too scrupulous. They're also evil and they hate us. The motive behind spoiling things for others and then throwing a wet blanket over the rained-on parade is a matter of neither caution nor morals. They suck the fun out of life in order to gain control."

Have to wonder why the NYCers elect Mr. Nanny. I guess it is that they are crazed enough to live there...

Sam, it probably has something to do with having to depend exclusively upon public transportation to get anywhere. The herd mentality probably becomes a comfortable safety blanket if you use it enough, and before long, you're used to being told what to do by people like Bloomberg.

P.J. O'Rourke's quote above is from his book "Driving Like Crazy", about how the automobile liberates the human spirit -you're free to go wherever you want, whenever you want.
