Last Saturday night I decided to play hookey from church (we usually go on Saturday night) and take my family to Disneyland for the evening. We have annual passes over there, but have been so incredibly busy since school started that we haven't had any time to use them. We needed a family night out.
Upon arriving at Dland, I began looking around at the other arrivals, and something began to catch my attention. Cops have a term for it, "JDLR",which stands for "Just Doesn't Look Right". There seemed to be an inordinate number of same sex couples running around and a dearth of families. It looked like we were walking into a gay rights rally.
Well, lo and behold, it turns out that we had just entered Dland on "Gay Days", an special weekend for the relationally impaired. Disney doesn't sponsor the event, but according to news articles I have read, they don't discourage it either. In fact, in Florida it's one of the biggest weeks of the year and Disney goes out of their way to attract guests of that persuasion.
Apparently if you wished to be recognized as a participant in this event, you were supposed to wear a red shirt. Everywhere we looked there were people wearing red shirts, including a number of them that said "Gay Days at Disneyland".
Boy, did I pick the wrong day to wear a red shirt.
Even though it was still in the high 70's, I couldn't wait to put on my light blue sweatshirt and remove myself from the roster of participants. Everywhere we went in the park we saw guys holding hands, girls holding hands, and occasionally some really flamboyant types who were doing their best to make a scene.
One thought came to mind. The internationally recognized color which designates "danger" or "stop" is red. How appropriate it was that red was the color of choice for "Gay Days".
