Why We Have the Electoral College

Many folks on the left bemoan the fact that the electoral college is still how we elect presidents. After all, they cry, how can you win the vote but lose the election? Well, take a look at this map from 2000 and maybe you'll see why the founders thought the electoral college a good idea. Do you want your president elected from just a few populous counties? (By the way, the red counties were won by Bush, the blue by Gore).




I expect that this year's map could look very similar, with perhaps a touch more red.
