Discovery Safely Away

I just watched the launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery, and thankfully everything went well. These things are always spectacular, given that somehow they have to lift nearly 5 million pounds off the ground and throw it in space at 18,000 miles per hour.

I had a chance recently to see the Shuttle Enterprise which was used in the early flight tests, and it's a pretty big vehicle.

For the first time NASA had a live camera on the main fuel tank which gave an amazing shot as the Shuttle ascended. When the main tank separated from Discovery, the picture was breathtaking. If they want to put the launch sequence from that camera's viewpoint out on DVD, I think I'd buy it.

Godspeed Discovery!
