Would Jesus Be a Democrat?

Since the 2004 election the Dems have been frantically trying to reposition themselves as a party that can appeal to religious Americans. The polls among churchgoers do not show favorable results for the Dems, and they're trying to figure out how to fix that. I've previously documented some of these efforts here and here.

This morning I saw one of the sillier articles I've read recently on RealClearPolitics.com. The title is "That Nazareth fellow would be Dem today". It then goes on to give all kinds of reasons why, if Jesus were physically walking among us today, that he would be a Democrat and that the writer's champion, Hillary Clinton, should make that point:
It's time to say the liberal Democrats are the ones who have consistently supported the Jesus-taught principles of helping the powerless. Ditto for championing the interests of middle-class working people.

Somehow, Democrats let others define them as elitist snobs. That label, not the liberal label, is the one Democrats have to shake.

Can Hillary help them do it?

She has the charisma and the intelligence - and she has infinite patience, or Bill would be toast.

She needs the guts to take a proud left turn and loudly proclaim that the United States is not a "Christian nation" in any pinched or exclusionary way. It's a nation that honors the individual rights of pagans, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and others, as well as Christians.

It is also nation that acts for the common good in ways that were meticulously outlined by a radical liberal named Jesus.

Okay, where to start. First of all, the only way you could assume that Jesus would be a Democrat would be to believe that he was not God, just some "radical liberal" teacher. Why? Abortion. There's no way the God of creation would willingly side with a party that promoted and supported the destruction of His creation. I wouldn't look for him at any MoveOn.org rallies.

After reading that, I'm sure all you lefties are expecting me to come out and say that I believe Jesus would be a Republican. Wrong again. I doubt if Jesus would be interested in joining up with any political movement, and to try and tie his teachings to the platform of a political party is folly. Either He is God or He isn't (and that's a choice all of us have to make), and if He is, his political affiliations don't matter. He can be whatever He wants to be.

I know the Dems love celebrity endorsements, but I don't think you'll see any Dem campaign ads that end with "I'm Jesus, and I approve this message".
