I was pretty much convinced that if the State executed Tookie Williams, L.A. would blow up and we'd have a repeat of 1992/1965. Why was I so convinced? I basically bought into the media spin.
Every day leading up to the execution I saw various demonstrations and interviews with many leaders of the National Association of Angry Colored People, all of whom seemed to suggest that Tookie would a flashpoint in the black community. Apparently not. It looks like the black community as a whole wasn't all that enthused with Tookie and his Crips brothers. After all, their communities have suffered the most from the terror of the gangs.
I have a feeling if you were to get candid interviews from Tookie's old home town, you'd find out that many folks were glad to see him gone. I'm glad I was wrong about my riot prediction.
