A large explosion rocked a chemistry school in eastern France on Friday, killing one person and injuring another, authorities said. How can you go wrong with a name like Superior National School of Chemistry? Is that sort of like the ITT Tech of Germany? You know, with ads that say "quit your low paying job and become a chemist!"?
Preliminary indications were that the explosion was not caused by a bomb or act of terrorism.
The blast occurred on the ground floor of the Superior National School of Chemistry in Mulhouse, near France's border with Germany, and was followed by a fire, officials said.
The surrounding area was evacuated.
Teachers were counting students to determine whether there were any other casualties, France-Info radio reported from the scene.
"We thought it was an earthquake," a resident identified as Jean-Pierre Langer told TF1 television. "It really shook."
I remember that we had a few guys in my class who thought they were pretty smart and actually found a recipe for a contact explosive. When the stuff was wet it was harmless, but when dry, could explode if jostled.
The idiots soaked some filters in the stuff and put them in one of the waste jars that were in the room. During a movie there was a sudden flash and puff of red smoke, and the top of the ceramic jar went flying. No injuries, but lots of smirking and snickering (and no, I didn't do it).
