A sarcasm alert here. Boy, I'll bet you were as surprised as I was that the Democrat won the presidential election on The West Wing last night. Who saw that coming?
Yeah, right.
Drudge has a piece today that says the producers of the show claim that their original script called for a GOP win, but they changed their mind after actor John Spencer died. They felt it would be too much of a blow to viewers if the Democrat lost his vice president and the election all at once.
Yeah, right.
Anyone who has been a regular viewer of The West Wing has known all along that the Democrat was going to win. How could he not given the way left views of the cast and producers? Do you think Martin Sheen (President Barlett) would have stood by and allowed the GOP to win and in effect repudiate his TV administration? After the "GOP is evil" speech given by a Dem campaign aide on last night's episode, it's obvious that there was no way the GOP was going to be allowed a win on that show (the Dems also took back Congress in this fictionalized election).
One interesting point, however, was that when an election challenge from the GOP appeared possible and was being pushed by the GOP campaign staffers, the candidate (Alan Alda) refused. That's a level of class and grace that the real-life Dem candidate Al Gore was unable to muster, and had Ohio or Florida been closer in 2004, John Kerry would have certainly gone the lawyer route in his bid to win. The fictionalized GOP candidate ended up looking better than the actual Dem candidates.
And how prescient was it of the producers to have a Mexican-American candidate beat an old white guy at the same time as thousands of illegals are marching all over America for rights to which they are not entitled? Great planning.
The show has always had excellent writing (though lefty) and casting, and that's why I kept tuning in. In some ways I'll be sorry to see it go (that last part wasn't sarcastic).
