The Pentagon is preparing to mobilize as many as 5-thousand National Guard troops to assist in patrolling the southwest borders, in an effort to slow the flow of Mexican illegal immigrants into the U.S. President Bush is expected to annonce his decision on the possible use of military forces in his speech Monday night. My question is - what about the wall? Will the president come out in favor of completing the border fence? This is a good start, but won't be enough to turn the tide of public opinion back his way. Frankly, it may be too late for Bush to undo the political damage among conservatives on this issue.
According to Pentagon and military officials, while the federal government would pay for the deployments the National Guard forces would remain under the command of the individual state governments, similar to the way National Guard forces are deployed and paid for during natural disasters.
In Arizona the press is almost gleefully reporting that on the first night of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's citizen border patrols, only one person was arrested. The report, of course, implies that this means the program was some type of failure.
I would disagree. After a week of heavy publicity about the sheriff's new program, don't you think the illegals and those that traffic in them would have changed their plans and headed another direction? To me the fact they had only one arrest means the program is having the deterrent effect desired, and the illegals will be looking for other areas to cross the border. It looks to me that Sheriff Joe has done what he's paid to do - prevent crime in Maricopa County.
I don't think the National Guard troops will be needed in that part of Arizona. Sheriff Joe has it under control.
UPDATE: Polls favor militarized U.S. border.
