Kerry, who voted to give President Bush authorization to use force against Saddam Hussein in 2002, said he would attach an amendment to this summer's defense appropriations bill calling for a total withdrawal of U.S. combat troops by the end of this year. But he acknowledged that the idea would be unpopular. "I know I'm not going to get the majority of my own caucus."
Of course he won't get a majority of anything for this amendment, except for kudos from the angry left which is what this is all about. Just as in the 80's when Dem candidates were shoving each other out of the way trying to claim to be the first to support the nuclear freeze, we can now expect Dems to rush to the mics to declare themselves the first to call for a quick withdrawal of our forces from Iraq.
It's all about firming up support from the wacky Howard Dean wing of the party - the wing which makes a lot of noise, but can't win anything. Kerry will fit right in.
