Tour de California Day 3

Tour de California posts: Day 1 / Day 2 / Day 3 / Day 4 / Day 5 /Day 6

Today's trip took us 30 miles north for a visit to Sonoma State University, the likely location of my daughter (and a lot of my money) starting in 2007. We had a small tour group and were led around the campus by a Sarah, a junior communications major.

The campus at SSU is very pretty - lots of large trees, greenbelts and even two lakes. Everything is pretty close together which makes moving between classes, dorms and other events pretty easy. It's the smallest of the State Universities, and a pretty close knit campus.

Of course there are some interesting building names, including the Adlai Stevenson building, the Rachel Carson building, and the Charles Darwin building. It's a regular liberal trifecta.

However, it's offset by the Charles Schultz Information Center and the Charlie Brown Cafe. The school can't be all bad.

The guide told us that some classes require the students to read the New York Times, which concerns me a little bit unless it's a fiction writing class. They also have all the usual multicultural mumbo-jumbo that you'll find in most universities these days. That's easy enough to ignore.

The facilities for the students are outstandings. The dorms are all apartment style and much nicer than what I stayed in back in the day. They also have a Recreation Center that would be the envy of any professional membership gym in the country. I just had to snap a photo of the 40' climbing wall.

The tour lasted 90 minutes and pretty much covered the whole campus. We also stopped by the music building which will be completely replaced in about two years with the new Green Music Center, a huge concert and recital hall. For my music major daughter, that's pretty exciting stuff.

After leaving the campus we decided to drive over to the coast to visit Bodega Bay. It was okay, but not someplace I'd long to visit again. After resting awhile back at the hotel we decided to drive down to Sausalito to look for a restaurant for dinner. I've never been there before, and we were pleasantly surprised. It's a cute little town right on the bay, and the restaurant we ate in sat right out over the water with a spectacular view across the bay to San Franciso. I tried to snap a photo with my cellphone camera of the view (pardon the quality):

For the Fourth we're going to head back into San Francisco to visit Union Square (shopping) and Chinatown (more shopping). We'll have to try and get out of town before it gets too late because our tram guide told us the other day that the crowds are huge in the evening due to the fireworks displays at Pier 39. More tomorrow.
