Tour de California Day 5

Tour de California posts: Day 1 / Day 2 / Day 3 / Day 4 / Day 5 /Day 6

Today was our day in Monterey and surroundings. We left Larkspur about 9am for the 130 mile drive south, arriving in Monterey at around 11:30. Our first stop was at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a place the Mrs. and I have visited 3 previous times. The Aquarium keeps getting better and better, and although you can pretty much see everything in a couple of hours, it's still worth the price.

The daughter spent a lot of time taking cellphone pictures of various creatures, especially the jellyfish of which they have numerous species, each one weirder than the next.

One of the major attractions is the Monterey Bay tanks which includes huge kelpbeds plus a variety of critters that you'll find swimming in the bay.

Hey - there's a pearl in my clam! And you thought only oysters had things of beauty inside.
In the afternoon after the fog and low clouds lifted we took the famous 17 Mile Drive through Del Monte forest and down to the dunes and rocky beach. The surf was beautiful.
The drive includes about 20 points of interest, including the famous Lone Cypress, a beach where the harbor seals and sea lions hang out, and for golf fans, the famous Pebble Beach Golf Club. This is the Lodge through which you pass to get to the view of the 18th green. The Cypress and a good view of the 18th green and fairway can be seen here from a previous trip. While taking the drive you'll also come across a lot of local wildlife, including the aforementioned seals and sea lions, squirrels, sea birds, and these Monterey Key Deer, which were grazing just off the Bird Rock golf course.
Then there was this guy who decided my white Toyota looked just like the other white rocks around and stopped by for a visit. Fortunately, he didn't decorate it like the rocks.

That pretty much ends the blogging for this tour. Tomorrow is basically a travel day just to get ourselves the 300+ miles home. Thanks for tagging along, and you can see the reports from all five days by clicking on the links at the top of the post.

UPDATE: Yes, Virginia, there is a Day 6 after all, and it isn't pretty.
