He's gone from claiming total innocence initially to this. I don't think this is the end of the revelations.Evangelist Ted Haggard admitted Friday that he bought methamphetamine and received a massage from a gay prostitute who claims he was paid for drug-fueled trysts by the outspoken gay marriage opponent.
Haggard resigned Thursday as president of the National Association of Evangelicals and stepped down as leader of his Colorado megachurch while the two groups investigate the allegations.
Talking to reporters outside his house Friday, Haggard denied the sex allegations but said that he did buy meth from the man because he was curious.
"I bought it for myself but never used it," he said. "I was tempted, but I never used it."
The news reports are all reporting this story from the standpoint of "what impact will this have on the election?". That's just dumb. Evangelicals aren't fragile flowers who fold up with the slightest breeze. Why would the failings of a preacher, even a high profile one, cause people not to vote?
If anything, some evangelicals are going to look at this as yet another attempt to discourage them and if anything that may make them more likely to be sure and vote. Let's remember, the reason the other guy came out with this information was because Haggard and his church were promoting a gay marriage ban in Colorado.
Haggard's sad story isn't going to make anybody stay home on Tuesday.
UPDATE: Haggard's lawyer needs to rein him in. On the news tonight I saw Haggard give an impromtu interview in which he admitted to a felony - buying methamphetamine. At this point, honesty is not the best policy. Shutting the heck up is the best policy and his lawyer needs to get ahold of him and give him a good shaking.
