SALT LAKE CITY — While Mitt Romney condemns polygamy and its prior practice by his Mormon church, the Republican presidential candidate's great-grandfather had five wives and at least one of his great-great grandfathers had 12.I wonder how many skeletons John McCain or Rudy Giuliani have among their ancestors, and will the press be quite so interested in those? The polygamy report really isn't fair to Romney, and the irony is, he's the only one of the major GOP candidates still married to his first wife (and he doesn't have any others, by the way).
Polygamy was not just a historical footnote, but a prominent element in the family tree of the former Massachusetts governor now seeking to become the first Mormon president.
My guess is that Romney will never be able to get over the hurdles that his Mormon faith will present. As an outsider looking in at Mormonism, there is some weirdness there, that while not automatically disqualifying someone from being president, will give many voters pause and will be a distraction from whatever positives Romney brings to the campaign.
