I can't think of a more abrupt way to wake up than to wake up smelling smoke. At about 5:50 this morning I sat straight up in bed and realized that our bedroom was filled with a strong smell of wood smoke. It was strong enough that I almost woke up my wife and told her to get the kids and get out of the house. I have smoke alarms throughout the house and none of them were sounding, so I calmed down a bit and realized that there probably wasn't a fire in my house, but I live in a building with 4 townhouses, and one of my neighbors was away for the weekend. If his house was on fire, my house was on fire.
I looked through the house to make sure I wasn't missing something, and then went outside to look around. One of my neighbors was also heading out to do the same. The smell was strong enough to get us both up.
There's no sign of a fire, but there must have been one somewhere upwind of our area because there's still quite a smell. My eyes are burning and my throat feels like I've spent the night sitting by a campfire.
I'd rather not have that kind of wake-up call again.
