Bush hates children!I'll update this post as the vote comes in.
No, he doesn’t!
UPDATE: Dems fall 13 votes short of an override. They were unable to pick up a single GOP vote after two weeks of lobbying. Nice work, San Fran Nan!
Captain Ed has this little piece of dishonesty from the morning's debate:
11:50 - Pelosi, still speaking, does a bait-and-switch. She says that the Republicans are wrong about the expansion covering people at 400% of the poverty level -- by showing current statistics of S-CHIP. This isn't about who's on now, it's about who gets put on after the expansion. Talk about intellectual dishonesty! And then there's this from California whacko Fortney "Pete" Stark:
Madam speaker, I, first of all, I’m just amazed that they can't figure out — the Republicans are worried that they can't pay for insuring an additional 10 million children. They sure don't care about finding $200 billion to fight the illegal war in Iraq. Where are you going to get that money? Are you going to tell us lies like you're telling us today? Is that how you're going to fund the war? You don't have money to fund the war on children. But you're going to spend it to blow up innocent people if he can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the President's amusement. The GOP is demanding a condemnation from Nancy Pelosi and the Dems over those remarks but won't get it because most of the Dems agree with them.
Pelosi gave away the real plan during a post-loss statement. She stated that the Dems won't quit until they insure 10,000,000 children. Note that she didn't differentiate at all between children who need the coverage and those who don't. They just want to say they insured 10 million kids regardless of need, and therein lies Bush's problem with the bill. He doesn't want to insure people who should be providing their own coverage, or move children from private coverage they already have to the government dole.
In Michigan 70% of the recipients of SCHIP money are childless adults. How many of those should the program cover? Another 10 million?
